The Truth About Water Baptism
Q: What if you can't be baptized?
A: What if a person is in prison and can't be baptized? What if someone's car breaks down in the desert and he believes in Jesus but dies of thirst before being baptized? What if a person in the hospital cries out to Jesus on her death bed, but isn't baptized? What if a minister preaches in the name of Jesus all his life, but dies as a martyr without being baptized? What if....
These are all good questions. But who is it that can't be baptized? Is anything too hard for God? (Jeremiah 32:27) Is there someone killing people behind God's back? (Deuteronomy 32:39) If someone believes in God in the desert, can't God keep him alive in order to obey his commandment? If they are in prison, can't God work it out to get a minister in to save them from hell?
To say that God is incapable of making a way for people to submit to a commandment that he instituted is to limit the ability of God. Those who make these hypothetical arguments are saying that they don't trust God to be able to keep that which they have committed unto him. (2 Timothy 1:12)
God did not command us to do something that can't be accomplished. We humans need lots of water to survive. I don't know anyone who lives somewhere where there isn't enough water to be baptized.
In Acts 8, I see a man being baptized in the desert. I personally know of two cases where prisoners have been baptized in Jesus' name on death row. I personally know of people on their death bed believing in Jesus AND then being baptized in Jesus' name for the remission of sins.
Ultimately baptism isn't a question about the ability to perform it. The question is whether someone is willing to obey to Jesus' commandment and submit to the will of God.
This is exactly what happened in the Garden of Eden. God gave a commandment and the serpent asked, "Did God really say that?"
The answer is simple. Yes. God did say that. He expects us to obey it. He makes every means available to obey it.
If you are reading this and have never been baptized in Jesus' name, what is stopping you from obeying this commandment of Jesus Christ right now and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins? Ministers are available. Water is abundant. The only question is whether you are willing to submit to God's will.
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
